What is Pierce's Disease?

Pierce's Disease is a bacterial infection, which is spread by bugs that feed on grapevines, particularly the "glassy winged sharpshooter." Grapevines that become infected with PD can quickly become sick and die.

  • Abstract: A key to the identification of Dilobopterus costalimai Young, Acrogonia sp., Oncometopia facialis (Signoret), Bucephalogonia xanthophis (Berg) e Plesiommata corniculata Young based on external morphology and male genitalia is presented. These sharpshooter leafhoppers are considered vectors of Xylella fastidiosa to citrus. The first four species are collected in several habitats such as orchard, forest, cultivable plain, swamp, sugar cane, coffee, while P. corniculata occurs mostly on grasses, Brachiaria decumbens Stapf, Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers.
