What is Pierce's Disease?

Pierce's Disease is a bacterial infection, which is spread by bugs that feed on grapevines, particularly the "glassy winged sharpshooter." Grapevines that become infected with PD can quickly become sick and die.

BIOLOGY OF THE XYLELLA FASTIDIOSA-VECTOR INTERFACE

  • Author(s): Almeida, Rodrigo; Burr, Thomas; Hoch, Harvey; Lindow, Steven;
  • Abstract: This project will build (and test) a framework to study the interactions between Xylella fastidiosa and insect vectors at the molecular, cellular and transmission biology levels. Understanding these interactions will lead to a better understanding of the transmission process and its biology, and potentially highlight promising strategies to disrupt pathogen retention by vectors and inoculation into plants. In addition, it will further elucidate how these genes function in infected grape and other hosts.
