Potential Plant Reservoirs for Xylella fastidiosa in South Texas

  • Author(s): Morano, Lisa;
  • Abstract: Pierces Disease (PD) of grapevine, which is caused by the xylem-limited bacterium Xylella fastidiosa, is an inevitable condition for Vitis vinifera vines growing in the Texas Gulf Coast region. This area of intense disease pressure offers an excellent opportunity to determine the scope of potential plants serving as reservoirs for this bacterium. As an initial evaluation of in this area we screened a diverse collection of plants rather than focusing on species previously known to harbor X. fastidiosa. A total of 101 native or ornamental Texas plants representing 40 families were evaluated for the presence of X. fastidiosa using ELISA, standard PCR, and quantitative real time PCR (QRTPCR) methods. Approximately 17% of plants assayed tested positive for X. fastidiosa by two or more screening methods.
