  • Abstract: Plants of Vitis vinifera, Red Globe variety, showing small, dark and angular leaf spots were observed in a vineyard located at Petrolina, PE, Brazil. Spots may coalesce and dry up, causing necrotic areas and leaf blight. The midribs may also show a discoloration. Cankers were often observed on petioles, stems and rachis, accomplished by necrosis of the epiderm. Cankers were also observed in grapes. Bacteria isolated from infected materials showing these kind of symptoms were characterized by biochemical, cultural, physiological and pathogenicity tests, as Xanthomonas campestris pv. viticola. This is the first report of this pathogen in Brazil.
