Natural co-infection of periwinkle by a phytoplasma and a Xylella-like bacterium

  • Author(s): Barros, Thereza; Kitajima, Elliot;
  • Abstract: Periwinkle plants with typical witches broom symptoms, sampled from a residential garden at Holambra, SP, revealed to be simultaneously infected by a phytoplasma and a xylem invading bacterium with morphological characteristics of a Xylella, which was recently reported naturally infecting periwinkle (UENO et al., 1998). This is the first report of simultaneous presence of phytoplasma and Xylella or Xylella-like bacterium in a plant.
